Annual Special Events Thursday night was pea soup supper night for many early Swedish settlers. Among their descendants, the tradition continues today, particularly during cool months. In 1993, the Friends of the Swedish Cabin held its first Pea Soup Supper as a fundraiser. Each year since then, the number of attendees has grown. This “souper” event sells out quickly and has become the major fund raiser for the Cabin. Following traditional Swedish appetizers, bottomless bowls of rich, hearty yellow pea soup are served with cheese and Swedish breads. After dessert and coffee, a musical program rounds out the evening.
Midsummer Day Picnic (Mid Sommars Dag Picknik), June
Originally held as a special event, the Midsummer’s Day Picnic has become an annual tradition. In Sweden, Mid Sommars Dag occurs during the time when the sun does not set for several weeks, but dances on the horizon. Our Midsummer’s Day picnic takes place in June and is a “pot luck” event, which often includes Swedish delicacies, fresh cider, and such typical picnic fare as hot dogs and hamburgers. Activities for the young and the young at heart include a “Hawk” (tomahawk) throw and Boot Toss. Items from the Butiken (gift shop) are displayed and available for purchase.

Cabin Crafts and Friendship Day at the Swedish Cabin, Spring
Colonial crafts are demonstrated and displayed at the Cabin. Numerous crafters such as weavers, guilders, carpenters, blacksmiths, and lace makers have demonstrated their crafts over the years. Costumed re-enactors abound. Food (including pea soup) and soft drinks are available for purchase.

Trim-the-Swedish Christmas-Tree Party at the Swedish Cabin, December
On the first Sunday in December, Friends of the Swedish Cabin gather to help decorate the cabin’s Christmas tree with traditional Swedish ornaments. The fireplaces are lit, the cabin is decorated, holiday music plays and spontaneous caroling erupts from time to time. Hot spiced punch (saft glögg) and other holiday treats are available. Some years ol’ St. Nick has visited the Cabin for this special event.
